Privacy Policy
Last updated 15 August 2026
HanTok is built to need as little of your data as possible. There are no accounts, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing tying your learning to your identity. This page explains the few places data does move.
What stays on your device
Everything you build up in the app is stored locally and never uploaded:
- The words you save, and how well you know each one
- Your review history and schedule
- Your streak, watch time, and daily activity
- Your settings — level, interests, reminder time, display preferences
If you delete the app, this is deleted with it. We have no copy and no way to restore it.
What leaves your device
Word explanations. When you tap a word for an explanation, the app sends that word and the sentence it appeared in to our server, which passes it to an AI provider (OpenRouter) to generate the explanation. It is sent without any identifier — not your name, account, device ID, or anything else that could link it back to you. Explanations are cached so the same word in the same sentence isn't looked up twice.
Clip requests. When the feed loads clips, or you search, your app asks our server for matching content. These requests include what you're filtering for (level, topic, search term) but no identifier.
Video playback. Clips play through YouTube's embedded player. When a video plays, YouTube receives the request directly and applies its own privacy practices, which we do not control. See Google's Privacy Policy.
What we don't do
- No accounts, so no email address, name, or password
- No analytics or tracking SDKs
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers
- No selling or sharing of data with third parties
- No location, contacts, photos, microphone, or camera access
Subscriptions
Payment is handled entirely by Apple. We never see your payment details. Apple tells the app whether a subscription is active — nothing more.
Notifications
If you turn on a daily reminder, it is scheduled locally on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and we cannot send you a push notification.
Children
HanTok is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Because the app requires no account and collects no personal information from anyone, there is nothing for a child to disclose.
Your rights
Because your learning data lives only on your device, you control it directly — Settings has an option to clear your vocabulary, and deleting the app removes everything. There is no server-side account for us to delete, export, or correct. If you have a question about data protection rights under the GDPR, CCPA, or similar laws, contact us and we'll answer.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects how your data is handled, the date above will change and the updated policy will be posted here before the change takes effect.
